The AR in Sydney Harbour

The brand new sound in Judith Barker's phenome series!

Delve into the sounds of Sydney with the latest installment in Judith Barker's phoneme series: The AR in Sydney Harbour! Richly illustrated by Janie Frith, this trip through the heart of Sydney will teach young children about the bossy AR sound, with vibrant landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, Luna Park and Taronga Zoo!

Recently, in a "Quick Six Interview" with Just Write For Kids, Barker told the story of the book's inspiration.

“A family trip to Sydney always includes a ferry ride to the Taronga Zoo, and this time the children wanted to meet two resident giraffes: Jimiyu and Zarafa, who are known to leisurely stroll along the promenade. A visitor standing next to me with a Nikon camera shouted, “Ah! The Sydney Harbour – What a spectacular picture! Taronga Zoo does have incredible views of the Coathanger and Sydney Harbour, so I knew the 'R' controlled 'AR' was the next phoneme story in the series."

Barker also chats about our iconic 'Coathanger' bridge.

"I was fascinated by the iconic architecture and the history of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in particular, Luna Park and Taronga Zoo, as well as its connection with the Barangaroo people. After I began researching the history of the construction of Sydney Harbour Bridge, I was fascinated by other iconic architecture in the surrounding landscape and its connection to Country."

Frith also detailed how she creates the magical illustrations that bring Sydney Harbour to life!

"The pages in the book were created using gelli plate monoprints. To begin, I make a collection of unique printed papers — mono meaning “one.” I roll slow-drying acrylic paint onto a gelli plate and then add texture using stencils, rubbing plates, bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard — anything that moves the paint in interesting ways. A sheet of paper is then placed on top and a print is "pulled."

With stunning visuals, all wrapped up in Barkers rhythmic verse, this book gets young ones sounding out the iconic landmarks and features of the beautiful harbour we call home.

The AR in Sydney Harbour is out now!
