Where did the idea for Evie's Spare Love come from?
Bec: "When we moved to the country, four years ago, one thing I was quickly impressed by was the sense of community. Here, people really see and look out for each other. I wanted to write a story that celebrated this community spirit and so, the idea for Evie’s Spare Love was born."
How long did it take you to write/illustrate the book?
Bec: "Once I had finally landed on a story idea that would capture the power of community spirit, writing the story was a matter of weeks. I followed the rule of three; so three times Evie tries to fix her heartache, before she decides that giving her spare love away is the best option. From there, the rest of the story flowed easily."
Kristen: "I started exploring characters and planning my roughs in early November 2025 and delivered the final artwork in February 2026. That’s a speedy turnaround of four months from beginning to end. And also remember that the artwork was made traditionally. Sometimes I find doubling down the best approach!"
What does your illustration process look like Kristen?
What is your favourite thing about being a children's author/illustrator?
Bec: "Definitely seeing my books out in the world. It is such a special thing to have my words illustrated and published so that others can share in my imaginings."
Kristen: "I love being a picture book illustrator because I get to turn feelings, memories and stories into something children can hold in their hands. There’s something incredibly special about creating a book that has been lovingly crafted from the first sketch to the finished pages, and knowing that a child gets to experience that care in such a tangible way. If my illustrations can make a child laugh, feel seen, spark their imagination or become part of a treasured childhood memory, then I feel incredibly lucky to do what I do."
If you could meet Evie in real life – what might you say to her?
Bec: "Keep on doing what you’re doing, everyday will be a little easier."
Kristen: "I’d remind her that her heart is so wonderfully big; there could never be a limit to how much love she has to give. That love is the greatest feeling of all time! G.O.A.T."
What is one thing you really hope readers take away from reading Evie's Spare Love?
Bec: "After reading Evie’s Spare Love, I hope young readers will become more aware of the communities around them, and be encouraged to reach out and connect, in times of need."
Kristen: "More than anything, I hope readers feel the warmth of Evie’s Spare Love. It’s a story about kindness, generosity and the beautiful ripple effect that happens when we share what we have. I hope children finish the book believing that their own little acts of love matter, and that there is always room in their hearts for a little more."
